Pasties for Everyone!
We are knee deep in our study of Michigan’s History and we have stopped on the time line to learn about the mining of iron ore up in the UP back in the 1800s. Our focus has been the little town of Fayette. We had a miner come visit and in our reading we have also learned so many interesting facts. In our study of the town of Fayette, we have had a chance to learn about the many different types of people that settled into the town to work for the Jackson Iron Company. One group of people there were the cornish and they made a yummy meal called a “pasty”. We had an opportunity to make and eat our own pasties today. They were fantastic! A big help to Liz Boeve and Katie from the food service! We also had some wonderful volunteers that came to help us. We could not have done it without you!
PS – We cooked our pasties in the ovens here at school… Ask your child how they used to warm up the pasties at the mines. (Hint: It involves a shovel and the lamp on their helmet!)

After a couple days of being told “They’re making us eat pasties”, Elliott actually admitted that they were good! We might even try making some at home!
