I am happy and sad to report that our 2008-2009 school year has come to an end… We had a fabulous year and I will miss my WONDERFUL fourth graders. We celebrated our last day by having an “Aloha Day”. Aloha means hello, goodbye, and I love you… What more can I say? Happy Summer!

They did it! WOW! What a wonderful year we have had. These fourth graders are the best and we will miss them. We had our graduation ceremony yesterday and you just have to see them in action. We are proud, proud, proud! There wasn’t a dry eye in the crowd when we showed our “Three Words” reflection video. I will post that soon. Enjoy your summer and don’t forget to visit!

We had a blast on Mackinac Island and we learned SO much! We had amazing chaperones and the students were SO well behaved. The only thing that didn’t cooperate too much was the weather, but we didn’t let that get us down! Thanks to everyone that made this trip so wonderful. Check out the slideshow below for all the great pictures from our trip.

Well, the rain did not wait for us today… We got to Central Park and the clouds opened up. We got soaked, but we are still smiling. (: It looks like we may be rescheduling our field day for Wednesday, but we will send a note home. You can check the planners too! Have a great Monday!

Just a reminder that field day for fourth grade will be on Monday, June 1. It will be for the whole day, so each child will need a sack lunch, sunscreen, water bottle, and their tennis shoes. It will be a great day! We will be spending the day with the students from Jeffers as well!

We are learning all about electricity, static electricity, lightning, circuits, etc… These kids are so smart! They are fabulous scientists. We made our own closed circuits, tested good conductors of electricity, and watched science in action. It was great!

Our third and fourth graders did a FABULOUS job at their performance on Tuesday evening. Here are some pictures from that night. A big thanks to Mrs. Ireland for all her hard work and extra effort to make it a success. The students at Holmes are SO talented!

Kyra’s mom (Dr. Powers) graciously came to visit us last week to share all of her knowledge about matter, chemical changes, physical changes, and other interesting facts. She is a Biochemistry Professor at Grand Valley, so she is our resident expert! She brought some really fantastic demonstations with her and shared so many great facts with the kids. We cannot thank her enough. She even made ice cream with Liquid Nitrogen! How cool is that? Anyway, check out the pictures below to see our fabulous fourth graders in action. Below that is a recipe from Dr. Powers on how to make the “silly putty”.
Silly Putty
1. Pour white Elmer’s glue into a plastic container or ziploc bag (~1 T).
2. Prepare saturated borax solution: add 1 tablespoon of Borax powder to 1 cup of water. Borax is a type of powdered soap that is available at Meijer.
3. Put 1-2 drops of food coloring in the glue. Using a wooden stir stick, mix in the color. After the color is stirred in, add ~1 T borax solution and continue to stir with wooden stick. After the silly putty is formed, remove putty from cup/bag and work it in their hands to get the excess water out. Putty can be stored in the cup/bag.
